Unraveling the Mystery of Wrist and Hand Pain » Assessing and Treating Thumb Injuries

Instructor: Ben Benjamin

Assessing and Treating Thumb Injuries

The thumb is the pivotal finger of the hand. Opposable thumbs make it possible for humans to do with their hands what most animals cannot. When the thumb is injured, the use of our entire hand is compromised. It’s difficult to do almost anything without pain.  We’ll focus on 10 of the most common joint or muscle tendon unit injuries that occur in the thumb that can have debilitating effects.

When the thumb does not heal properly, it can become a lifelong problem. The muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints of the thumb often develop adhesive scar tissue, causing continuous or intermittent pain. Continuous use of a painful thumb can create an endless cycle of pain and disability. Without proper assessment and treatment, this can continue for many years.

In this three-course series, Dr. Ben Benjamin discusses the most common causes of wrist and hand pain. You'll learn the relevant, detailed anatomy, assessment tests, and effective treatment techniques that can reduce, prevent, and eliminate acute and chronic wrist and hand pain.
