Breast Cancer and Massage Therapy

This is the third course in the More about Cancer Care and Massage Series. In this session Tracy Walton will show you why it is important to know about massage and breast cancer: Over 2.6 million breast cancer survivors live in the US, and approximately 1-in-8 women in the US is expected to develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. A growing number of men are developing this disease, as well. More and more people are seeking massage for support during the cancer journey. Massage therapists who know what to ask and how to work safely may help people cope with the disease, symptoms, and side effects.

In this course you will learn:
• Common clinical presentations of breast cancer
• How the "Cancer Status Questions" and "The Diagnostic Questions" are used to design a safe massage treatment
• Why and how "The Vital Organ Principle" and "The Filter and Pump Principle" can make a massage session safer for a client with advanced breast cancer
Tracy will offer stories, interview questions, and easy-to-use principles in this overview of safety essentials.

Note: This course series reinforces and expands upon some important concepts from the popular Massage in Cancer Care series. This series goes beyond general issues to focus on the two most common cancer types- breast and prostate- with vital information for the massage therapist. Each course series stands alone, and the first cancer series is not required for participation in this series.
